Best M4 loadout in the Modern Warfare 4 beta
By TourneyTime ·
The short version
The M4 is the assault rifle to beat in the Modern Warfare 4 beta. wzranked has it first on its best-weapons list, codmunity rates it Absolute Meta in multiplayer at roughly a 32% pick rate in its own sample, and Skycoach puts it in its predicted S-tier alongside the ISO Nightshade. Very little recoil, high damage, sane mobility — the beta’s jack of all trades.
What there is not is one agreed build. The two trackers publishing full M4 setups list different muzzles, different lasers and different optics. Exactly one attachment appears in both: the FSS Fireline Grip.
So rather than pick a winner and present it as settled, here are both published builds side by side.
The two published M4 builds
| Slot | codmunity (Absolute Meta) | wzstats (Versatile) |
|---|---|---|
| Muzzle | FSS IS300 | FSS IS40 |
| Optic | — | IOTA-D |
| Underbarrel | FSS Fireline Grip | FSS Fireline Grip |
| Rear grip | Brace DX Grip | — |
| Stock | PF1 Fixed Stock | — |
| Laser | SA LAZ-500 | SZ GEN.6 PEQ |
| Ammunition | — | 5.56 NATO Frangible |
Sources: codmunity and wzstats, both checked 23 August.
What they actually agree on
- FSS Fireline Grip in the underbarrel. The only attachment shared by both builds. If you take one thing off this page, take that.
- An FSS-family muzzle. They split on which — IS300 versus IS40 — but both spend the muzzle slot in the same family rather than skipping it.
- A laser in one of five slots. Again, different lasers, same decision to run one.
- Five attachments, no barrel and no magazine. Neither build touches either slot.
Where they diverge is the back half of the gun. codmunity spends two slots on handling — rear grip plus a fixed stock — while wzstats spends them on an optic and an ammunition type. That is a real difference in philosophy, not a rounding error, and it is why you should not treat either list as gospel.
Why two trackers can both be right
The M4 unlocks at Player Rank 9 and carries 68 weapon levels (Dexerto’s MW4 wiki). Attachments unlock as you level the gun, so a build assuming a fully levelled M4 is useless in your first hour with it — wzstats publishes a separate low-level variant for exactly that reason.
On top of that, these are beta samples measured over days, not seasons, on a rotating map and mode list. Two trackers weighting recoil against mobility slightly differently will land on two different muzzles from the same family.
If you are early in the grind: run the FSS Fireline Grip as soon as it unlocks, add the optic you can actually aim with, and add the rest as it comes. That is the part both builds support.
The caveat that matters most
Beta weapon levels, unlocks and Player Rank all reset when the beta ends (Skycoach). And Modern Warfare 4 does not launch until 23 October (Activision), with launch balancing, a full weapon roster and attachments the beta has not shown.
So this is a beta meta, not the launch meta — and none of this is Warzone data. Warzone tunes weapons separately, so an M4 that dominates six-minute multiplayer matches is not automatically a Warzone pick.
There is one more beta window to test it in: Weekend Two opens on Friday 28 August, with no pre-order needed, on all supported platforms including Nintendo Switch 2 (The Source).
Sources we check
There is no first-party Activision loadout page, so the anchors here are the meta trackers that publish their own data: codmunity and wzstats for the builds, wzranked and Skycoach for the tier placement, Dexerto’s MW4 wiki for the unlock level and weapon level count. We are running both published builds rather than merging them into one, because merging two disagreeing lists produces a build nobody actually tested. When a consensus M4 build emerges — or when launch balancing resets it in October — this page gets rewritten.
FAQ
What is the best M4 loadout in the MW4 beta?
There is no single agreed answer yet. The FSS Fireline Grip is the one attachment both published builds run; beyond that, codmunity favours handling attachments (Brace DX Grip, PF1 Fixed Stock) and wzstats favours an optic and ammunition type.
Is the M4 the best AR in the beta?
It is the most consistently top-rated one — first on wzranked’s list, Absolute Meta on codmunity at roughly a 32% pick rate, predicted S-tier on Skycoach.
What level does the M4 unlock at?
Player Rank 9, with 68 weapon levels to grind through for its attachments.
Will this build carry to launch?
No guarantees. Beta progress resets, and launch balancing lands with the full game on 23 October.
